Going Through Trials and Suffering: Where Do You Turn?

Trials, trouble, chaos, hurt, pain, suffering... these are common life circumstances and events. No one is immune. For family members with loved ones battling addiction, it's been a treacherous road of heartache, broken dreams, broken promises, loss, lies, deception, worry, wickedness, and evil.

Where do we turn for hope, comfort, and peace?

Jesus tells us twice in the book of John,

Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in me (John 14:1).

Again Jesus tells us,

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27).

The remedy for a troubled heart is believing Jesus.

Jesus is our peace. We won't find peace in the world.

Jesus knows that He is about to be crucified to fulfill God's plan. Jesus will be the living sacrifice to take the sin of the world on Himself so that those who believe will be made right with God and have eternal life.

Jesus is about to endure the most heinous and gruesome death the world has ever seen, yet he is encouraging his disciples. He also tells them,

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world (John 16:33).

Jesus is the one we turn to for peace as we go through trials, pain, and suffering. No one knows what it's like to endure these things greater than Jesus because He took the sins of the whole world on Himself. And, Jesus has overcome the world! He conquered sin and death, and God raised Him from the dead. For those who believe Jesus, in Christ, we have also died to sin and have been raised up in new life.

Jesus is our peace in the middle of trials and suffering.
